Attractions
The historic nature of some of Portsmouth's attractions may deter people with disabilities from visiting them, fearing access would be poor. However, the Accessible Portsmouth team was pleasantly surprised to find how much was available.
For instance, the famous Victorian battleship HMS Warrior provides chairlifts between the upper deck and main gun deck while Nelson's flagship HMS Victory offers video shows for wheelchair users and people with restricted mobility.
Many offered audio commentaries, some suitable for use with hearing aids, and text or Braille information for people with hearing or visual impairment.
Vera Rose, who is visually impaired, has lived in Portsmouth all her life but was visiting some attractions for the first time.
She was amazed at how much she enjoyed them although she and her companions offered some places tips for improvement.
One of the most important elements was the attitude and awareness of staff, and Vera recommends people with disabilities ring in advance to inform staff and see if special tours are available.
'I want to know I can go round and be received well,' said Vera. 'I think it can be particularly hard for deaf people because their disability is not immediately obvious so unless they let places know in advance they may miss out.'
'However, we were very pleased with most things and I could not find fault with the attitude of staff at any of the attractions. There was always someone willing to help.
'When places have that sort of atmosphere you can start to relax and enjoy yourself.'
